Successful Workplace Communication
Scenario-based micro eLearning

Analysis

In this fictional company, job satisfaction is not rated as high as the organization would like. In fact, it is 20% lower than it has been in previous years.  This was noticed through a company-wide survey. Additionally, collaboration and productivity have been down by about 10% this year as compared to the previous year.

This is a problem for the leaders of this organization, and they have decided to hire an instructional designer to see if they can find a solution.

Looking through the survey on job satisfaction, it was noted that collaboration, trust, and positive communication were all rated lower than in previous years and also lower than the other items on the survey.  Next, an interview with some employees and supervisors was conducted to further assess where there was a problem. Both employees and supervisors had expressed that there has been a good amount of tense conversation occurring in the workplace.  This led to another survey of the employees to find out what topics were stressful to talk about. The surveys were analyzed, and it was noted that job performance discussions between employees and supervisors were difficult.  Additionally, discussions between coworkers on work habits caused friction.   It was determined that there is a need for employee training on successful communication in the workplace.

Challenge

Increase job satisfaction by 20% to be on par with previous years and increase collaboration and productivity by 10% to meet organizational goals. In order to do this, the company as a whole needs to have more successful communication habits.

Design development

I designed and developed this course from start to finish. To accomplish this, I created a needs-based assessment, a storyboard, developed a prototype, and then the final product.

The learners for this training are the employees and supervisors of this fictional company.  This fictional company has 150 employees.  This training can be completed virtually by each employee.  This training is the first step to solving the challenge.  This training should be followed up with small group role plays led by a facilitator. The topic of the role plays should be successful communication practices.

The learning objectives for this course are as follows:

Objective 1 -Recognize that successful communication can have more favorable outcomes.

Objective 2 -Complete a learning scenario involving a manager and a learning scenario involving a coworker.

Objective 3 -Understand the 4 components of successful communication: active listening, repeating, respect, and positivity.

This is a scenario-based micro e-learning training.  The training will include 2 short scenarios so that the learner can be engaged and learn by doing. This training should last about 5 minutes.

The course is designed in Articulate Storyline. The scenarios are focused on filling knowledge and skill gaps in understanding how to successfully communicate in organizations by active listening, repeating, showing respect, and reflecting positivity.

  • 1 week after training, employees should participate in a small group role-play with a facilitator.

  • 2 weeks after training, employees should fill out a brief survey rating their knowledge of the specific scenarios they learned through training.

  • 2 months after training, a brief survey should be sent out to see if employees are implementing what they learned in training.

  • 4 months after training, employees should fill out a job satisfaction rating.

  • 6 months after training, company productivity and collaboration should be measured.
